Over the hills

Posted by FredG on 18 Feb 2017, 16:29

Here's one I planned earlier, much earlier

4 x Pack Horses Hat Prussian Artillery 6007
2 x Pack Mules (Donkeys) Irregular Miniatures
I x Galloper Gun Newline Designs BA17/3
1x Howitzer SHQ British Mortar Gun29 (I'm not sure why it's catalogued as a Mortar)

The animals are cleaned off ready to undercoat.

We're heading for the hills and not a von Trapp in sight :-D :yeah:

I started with the guns and carriages and found the SHQ gun had half a spoke missing. :( It's at 1o'clock on the photo above. I got out the soldering iron again and I think I've made not too bad a job of the repair.
I think it would have been quicker to repair a full sized wheel though. The drills, knife and files had to come into operation.
All is now undercoated :-D :yeah:

I've added blankets to 3 of the horses to take the Howitzer parts. The wheels are good to go and the barrel will strap on. The problem I'm having is to fit the gun carriage onto the back of the third horse. Would anyone object to see the gun carriage strapped on upside down? It fits beautifully that way.

The Over the Hills project is slowly progressing. As mentioned above, I've added blankets to three of the pack horses which will carry carry the Howitzer barrel, carriage and wheels. The fourth horse will draw the Galloper gun. I've made a cradle to hold the Howitzer barrel, it's a bit makeshift but after all it is war! The horses still need more painting.and a series of straps and ropes made.

Now I have to find handlers. I'm thinking that some of the Revell British Foot Artillery figures will do the job. Any suggestions? ( I mean about the figures)

I've decided to forgo the Revell figures and use some of the Prussian artillery figures. I've removed their boots, to give them trousers. Minus artillery accessories and swords changed to sticks, they look ok as RA packhorse/ mule handlers.

I've started painting the personnel after removing unnecessary accoutrements.

The packhorses now have their loads roped on and I think they look ok. Possibly still some touching up to do but progressing nicely.

The mules/donkeys are not the best figures ever but they'll do. :-D

This is taking much longer then expected, being called up to the Scottish estate for a few days didn't help either. I've had to split the display into two. The Galloper gun will be set in its own base as the train was getting far too long with all of them together.
The main display is together now and needs finishing with grasses, scree etc. I'll be a bit busy with the PVA glue for a while.

I've been terraforming all day so I finally have my mountain artillery train.

There is the added bonus of the Galloper gun which was not in the original plan and as it turns out is not included in the main train.

What am I particularly pleased with? The scree.
The touch of madness? The horse poop on the larger diorama :eh:

I don't think so Kekso. There are 13 posts now in this thread and 10 of them are mine. There's not the interest ;-)

Hello Mr Fred.

I have only just spotted your post, apologies.

Very nice indeed. I would have been tempted to scald and push the tails down on the Hat horses. However, overall a most unusual diorama of the often neglected, but vitally important aspect of warfare, supply
.

Well done.

My excuse for the tails is that they're suffering wind of some description :P

Fred this looks very nice. Both your conversions as well as the whole diorama.

May this be because you forgot to share something basic with us, your audience, at the top of your post?
What country are these men from? What campaign? What mountains do they climb? I read all of your posts again from top to bottom but I can't figure it out: Prussian uniforms with British equipment but with those shako's the men look like Dutch Gunners... but there is no hills in the Netherlands and neighter in Prussia :eh:
Or did I read over it? Did I miss anything? Von Trapp? Who is that?
If you start your topic with describing a clear subject and at least one line of historical background, you give your audience a way to participate or at least, you create an expectation so they are curious how it will develop.
What do you think?
