The Saxons are coming

Posted by FredG on 11 Feb 2017, 17:52

I've raided the stash and selected these as the next project.

They're the Napoleonic German type not the old Anglo-Saxon type. ( of course).

I must say that these are the best Hat figures I've encountered so far. They're clean, no flash and have good detail. There's 192 of them so I may be some time, I'm hardly a speed painter.

I still expect the odd Austrian, Russian or miscellaneous Cavalry type to be squeezed in between painting the different regiments.

Charge!

If the Norman's stand for the two Volleys I'm sure they'll do OK against the bayonet charge.

The first detachment is undercoated. I'm planning to do at least six different Regimental uniforms so this Regiment will stand in reserve.
The left arm and the musket were merged into a bit of a shapeless lump so I better defined them with the use of needle and scalpel. This was then finished (smoothed) off with a the same needle heated up. (I have needles with wooden handles specifically for working with this soft plastic ;-) )

Good work. I've had to use the heated needle treatment myself on some of Hat's less well finished figures. Keep us posted on your progress.

Two boxes of these figures will give you a lot of work indeed! And I agree with you, they look really nice!

It's annoying to have to free paint gaiters on all these. The trousers, as modelled, weren't adopted until the 1812 campaign in Russia and issued to all the reformed regiments in 1813.
I've opted to paint the shorter, below the knee, gaiters which were issued from 1806 although the longer, over the knee, gaiters were still in use in some regiments to 1810.
I've not bothered to cut the trouser bottoms off the figures.

The Saxons are progressing slowly. The most striking thing so far is how young they look.

Once the buttons are on ( Brass) these will be Prince Xavier Regiment.

The best thing is in having them in a stash.
I remember someone painted one on the Forum a few years back before I became a Grand-Daddy Member! Anyway I bought a few boxes after seeing it. Perhaps Benno painted it? BB

In 1806 he senior officers were not so young Peter.
Average age of the Oberst was 65, regimental staff officers 60 and Kapitans 55.
I think a good example was Generalleutnant Heinrich von Boblick the Commandant of Königstein who was 90 and needed a younger man to run around for him. This younger man was Generalmajor Friedrich von Burgsdorff a spritely 72.

Hey Fred, you are talking about the commanding officers, but what I mean is the canonmeat! The soldiers in the ranks! ;-) :-D

The sign on for 20 years (or until you're dead) or go to jail, then be in such debt to the regiment that you have to come and work on the Commandant's estate for subsistence wages men Peter. The jails must have been really bad :eh:

Things have progressed with these a little slower this week. That could possibly be due to the Artic (truck) that attacked the passenger side of my car as I waited in a filter lane at the traffic lights on Tuesday morning. MrsG wasn't too happy as she was sitting on that side at the time  . The car has been written off and will be taken away on Monday. We haven't been that idle so I collect my new car on Tuesday :yeah:
Meanwhile I'm hoping to base the first contingent ( the reserves) tomorrow (Sunday) so possibly will do photos then.

A few more on the table, Grenadiers of Prinz Frederick August Regiment 1806. ( I like the name for some reason)

It still irks that they weren't sculpted with gaiters. I cannot find any reference to them wearing over-trousers for campaign.

Some cavalry after these I think

A little more colour on them now. Lots of detail painting still to add, pom-poms, braids etc. They're very clean but even so not a drop of white paint on them,

Almost there with these Grenadiers. They've been well dirtied and brought some way back so they're in campaign mode. Still no white paint used.

I swear a friend of mine posed for that bottom left figure
