Austrian Fusiliers

Posted by FredG on 28 Dec 2016, 22:44

With the Grenadiers finished I've moved on to Fusiliers. This first group is a set with the Austrian 'German' uniform.
So far they're only undercoated as I'm still painting a small group of Cuirassiers.

Oddly enough the sepia wash of the Grenadiers has given me an idea for use with my French Camel Corps camel figures :-D

The decision is made, they are to be IR38.

I've made a start so here's a couple of the poses early in the process.

I do like these Newline figures :-D

I was asked last night in the chatroom how these figures compare size wise with the plastics. I've opened a box of Italeri 6005 and height wise they look ok (MrsG agrees or perhaps I should say I agree with MrsG). They are more well built than the plastics (stockier) especially in the legs and weapons but to me the plastics look somewhat underweight Mixing the Newline Hungarians and the Italeri Germans wouldn't present a problem to me.

Needless to say others may think differently

To help I put three 20mm Hungarian Fusiliers next to a sprue of 1.72 Italeri German Fusiliers.

The Newline Napoleonics are really wonderful figures - and astonishing cheap for pewter figures of a small producer!

I have bought some of the austrians too in the past, but they are really a little bit shorter than the Italeri figures. They fit relativly well together in regard that some humans are shorter and other taller - besides the aspect that theirs rifles are quite different.

I think I've got past the boring bit on these ( I find painting gaiters and boots not the most pleasurable of tasks). They're coming along nicely but also hampered by the shenanigans of someone (who shall remain nameless) adding more Grenadiers to the production line.

I have the book of the battle of Wagram in front of me, and there are a lot of uniform plates in it. A lot of these fusseliers, and I couldn't imagen that these uniforms existed in so many colors. Most of the time you see them with the yellow colors, but you can paint with almost every color! ;-)

But go on Fred, they look lovely so far!

The colour and the buttons have to be matched too to get the correct Regiment Peter

The yellow is matched with brass buttons to get IR12. They were reputedly the bravest and most decorated regiment which is probably why they're seen to much. Apparently they were short stocky fellows too.

Here we have the first installment of my Austrian Fusiliers.

These are of IR38 Herzog von Wurttemberg.
The regiment was formed in 1792 and it's original intake was from Neiderlande and would have been Walloon. From 1798 the intake area was Galicia - Kielce - Siedlec . Disbanded in 1809 the Regiment had a second raising in 1814 when the intake became Italian as the forfeited Italian territories were returned to Austria.
1815 saw it as IR38 Freiherr von Prochaska.

Now for the Hungarians :-D

Thank you gentlemen.

I've prepared the next unit. They will be being painted after I finish messing around with some Airfix Hussars.

I must admit I like them all FredG, the metal and the plastic sets. I believe it was about 2003 when the Italeri set marched upon the shelves of the Market Place, and they have been a mainstay product for sale ever since.
Your metal soldiers do your artistry credit, they are Splendid indeed, and I have always liked the one set advance pose on mass. BB

Thank you BB. As for artistry I think that is all credit due to the sculptor. I just slap some paint and washes on, a careful slap admittedly.
I'm just trying some acrylic inks on horses and pretty happy with the results. They're Airfix British Hussars and by Jove the flash is pretty horrendous. I cleaned them up enough for them to pass as crowd fillers, even getting to removing the boots of the Hussars ( re-sculpting the legs) to show campaign trousers. The figures themselves are not that bad for 40+ years old. I wish I'd spent a little more time cleaning them up. Still I have a few more boxes I can do that with :P
