WW2 - LVT-(A)1 USArmy 708th Tank Battalion Saipan 1944 - USA

Posted by Hellboy on 01 Dec 2016, 16:46

'Japanese kiss'

Some pictures of a recent project - construction, painting and aging of a 'LVT-(A)1' from the manufacturer Dragon (item number 7387).

For the diorama I will probably use the figures 'Japanese Army Aviation' from the manufacturer Orion (item number ORI72010R).

The diorama tells us the history of the battle 'Saipan' in June 1944. A wave attack of the US army was repulsed by the Japanese. One 'LVT-(A)1' has received several hits in the engine compartment. The drive falls out. The team can escape uninjured. However, the tank must be left behind with engine failure. A few days after the fight japanese soldiers examine the wreck and the effect of their own weapons.

Since I am still not 100% sure with the planning, I have not applied the impacts of the projectiles on the tank. If you want, you can tell me what you think of the planning. I would be glad about suggestions and criticism.

Pictures of the construction and the painting of the base as well as the painting of the figures come as soon as possible.

Enjoy the photos of the tank! :-D

Hi Hellboy, I think is a very good project, the material you choose is excellenet, the Dragon kit and the figures looks great. I like the way in wich you planned the diorama.
fellow, it will be very interesting for me, the pacific front is one of my favourites topics and the LVT family one of my favourite vehicles.
Some months ago I made one (but just the common lvt4 transport version, and from airfix

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47210/thread/1466377704/lvt4+airfix

For that I had to take a large number of pictures, some are from the LVT a1 and I think i have some pics of "hit" or semi destroyed vehicles, if you autoriced me a could deploy some pics here that could help in your project)

My opinion is that there is good material to make a beautiful scene of the war in the Pacific, to see how you develop the theme,
Santi.

Peter, thank you for your friendly comment. To your question. It looks as if the Dragon 7387 LVT- (A) 1 kit can not be bought anymore. I've looked into some online stores. Everywhere I get the message 'CURRENTLY SOLD OUT'. :( Whether Dragon this model no longer produces? Were very very bad, because the kit is really great. But I do not know exactly. Has anyone here in the forum more information about it?

There is a plan.
A Base.
One tank.
Equipment.
Figures.
Let the operation roll on.
Shoot with glue, paint, sweat, without blood to a nice Diorama :cowboy: Frank!

It looks a very prommissing scene, but what disturbs me the most is the amount of filth on the amtrack. An amtrack right out of the water would be much cleaner, imho.

First of all thank you for the nice comments. I am very curious about how the diorama will develop and whether I will succeed at all. We will (hopefully) see it soon .... ;-)

This is a good objection. However, the scene represents something different. The vehicle came from the interior of the island and was freshly refueled and refounded (we will see this - on the vehicle are canisters stand and ammunition chains hang over the shields). Just then, the generic attack came and damaged the tank. The vehicle and position must be abandoned.

If the tank had just come out of the water shortly before, it would be full-fueled and ready for the fight. Would jump over the stand directly into the Island interior. In this case, the drawers and muliton boxes make no sense. The beach section is a kind of supply point.

This is at least the current plan. I hope you like the plan. Or is it unrealistic? I can still change everything. I would be happy about ideas and creativity.

It's time for a little update again. Hope you like the pictures!

The story has changed a bit. The comment from mickey mouse was the reason. mickey mouse, thanks for your tip. :yeah: I'm curious if you like the new story better. I find it better now.

"The tank was already In fight in the interior of the island. However, in this area of the battle the American tanks are forced to turn back and flee. The LVT tries to reach the open sea. But he is stopped on the beach by the Japanese and shot at by them. A hit in the engine compartment. A small caliber. Is enough to damage the engine. The crew must give up the vehicle and flee on foot. "

I have put together some pictures which will give us an impression of the island today and also of the fighting of 1944. Let's start with that ....

Have fun! :-D

....... now follow the next steps. A layer primer must be applied to the diorama. This is necessary since we have combined many different materials such as plastic, metal, resin and sand. Only after priming can the airbrush be started. Let's see how everything is still developing. I am very curious!

It is currently too hot in Germany to make something for our hobby. :sweatdrop: So today there is only a very very 'petit' update. ;-)

We see nothing spectacular. But there are two work steps on a long way to a finished diorama.

First we see the base after the primer has been applied. Then follow the pictures showing the base, after applying acrylic paints with the airbrush. Small parts were painted with the brush.

Now follow the painting with oil colors. Let's see how it works ...

Have fun! :-D

Wiking and KenzoSato, thank you for your nice comments. I am very happy that you like the base. The work has been so much fun to me. :-D

Yesterday I made the water surface with 'Still Water (Clear)' from the manufacturer 'Vallejo'. Shallow waves now hit the beach. Looks a bit like being on holiday. I immediately took the opportunity and took an extensive bath in the sea. Very refreshing!!!! 8) But - Wiking you're right - all the crap on the beach really is a bit disturbing .... :(
