French Foreign Legion (WWII)

At Bir Hakeim there was the Pacific battalion wearing the same mixed uniform and equipment of the legion :

I don't think there was some segregation in the Legion and from what I know none of the legionnaire who fought at Bir Hakeim was originated from metropolitan France. Many spanish who fled Franco, and probably some black among them.

I know that many here don't like to see eyes painted on figures ;-) , but I still like it a lot and wanted to improve my method of work.
It's not easy to paint eyes in 1/72 scale, especially when you have hundreds or thousands figures to paint, so I've made some test to improve the eyes and found a new more easy way to paint them, first I paint a black dot, then add a horizontal white stripe inside, and finish by a vertical black line on the white, as yo can see on photo.

I don't like to see eyes on 1/72 figures but most important is that you do what you like and as you like.
Thanks for sharing your technique. I'm sure some would find it very useful.

Great to see your way of painting eyes, but I can't say I'm a fan of it. But when you like it, I don't have problems with that. ;-)

Many thanks,

Today was the celebration of the liberation of Cannes (August 24, 1944) so I took some picture ;-), it is somewhat related to this subject (The French foreign legion landed in the South of France, as well as many others who Fought Rommel in the desert).

ADM--

Your pictures and videos always make me want to fly over the pond and visit Cannes. Perhaps I will bring my wife and little boy along, too!

Thank you everybody !

To finish the painting, I've added the lips on the face (Vallejo 70982 cavalry brown).

The shoes are Vallejo 70941 burnt Umber

Few tufts of grass on the SHQ figures to link the feet to the base are painted Vallejo 70881 Yellow green with black wash and drybrush.

The french Helmet is Vallejo 70889 Olive drab

The french sailor hat is Vallejo 70899 Dark Prusia blue, some white stripes above and red 70909 Vermillion for others details.

The Legion hat is Vallejo 70883 Silvergrey with a white drybrush.
Officers have a sand hat cover (as well as English helmet : Vallejo 70 977 desert yellow) with a small square hole above to show the gold stripes of their rank, This can be located front or more commonly on the left side to avoid being a specific target for snipers. (my Grandfather worn such hat with cover).

The base of the figure is painted Tamiya XF59 Desert Yellow.

For the French guns I've added another black wash with a thin brush (0 or 1) just around the details and then a drybrush only on prominent edges/details Vallejo 70976 Buff. Wheels are Tamiya XF1 flat black.

Those 125 figures with 4 guns are finished (but not this WWII project), I can go back to my huge Napoleonic project now !
