My first Assyrians

Here are my four first Assyrians from Caesar. They are beautifully sculpted and more challenging(for me) to paint than Romans I. Doing these I also tried out my new magnifying lamp that worked out great.

I got a lighted magnifying desk lamp for Father's Day a few years ago. Love it! Only problem is now all my mistakes are magnified!

They look great. You really got those spears to be straight. Love the metallic colors.

Being rather cheeky i copied your photo, and added more light to it,thus revealing all your detail work. Splendid painting on these tiny figures. Are they off to lay siege to Jerusalem? BB

Thanks for the kind comments. Haha..yeah, the drawback with magnifying things is that you see stuff TOO well!

@Beano Boy
Yeah, I always get my photos too dark, but I'm slowly learning how to edit them with Photoshop. This time though it only brightened the background, with an automatic fix. Do you care to post your edited version?

Great paintjob! I realy love assyrians. I"ve painted a dba army long time ago (i think i did put pictures on bennos somewhere) and i also used some newline figs. Those are great also and match very well with the ceasars. Hope to see some more soon !

Ok, so here's another four in progress. I'm still experimenting with various colours, especially the skin tone. Since they are from the Middle-east I want them to have a darker skin colour(I think the type is called "olive"). I don't know if I've managed to come close to that, but I've mixed a darker flesh tone with leather brown and then washed it with sepia. Are any of you "skin-experts", that can give me some advice? :-)

I'm also considering whether to paint the weapons in bronze or iron. Regular metal looks better with the brown, but as this was in the Bronze age, I suppose it would be more historically correct to have the spear tips and sword blades in bronze? The helmets on the other hand were iron, that I know :)

Thanks for watching

For those who haven't seen painted Assyrians before, there are some fine examples on the Caesar website:

http://www.miniknight.com/images/gallery/G9/assyriansRoland.JPG
(plus several other examples if you search; the site is great for colour guides on all their sets, as well as for general inspiration.)

The Assyrian infantry are also one of the few painted sets at PSR:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=842

Incidentally, although the Caesar website says that this set is discontinued, and was indeed becoming rather hard to find, several UK suppliers seem to be restocked with it and a number of others. :-D

Now, if only Caesar would pull their N**i finger out and finally produce their long-promised Babylonians...! ;-)

Thanks for the links, they will be a good inspiration. Right now I "only" have Osprey's Ancient Assyrians as a painting guide. That's a nice looking army of yours, dykio, especially the purple and blue colour theme. I don't understand what "inline" figures mean, though. Is that the manfacturer?

I mostly ordered from Ebay until I found this great forum and some UK sellers that still have the assyrians in stock. No more US orders! :yeah:

Looks like they are a good compliment to the Caesar and Hät figures, especially the command unit. Always nice with metal figures too!

Finally done with the four archers. Repainted the skin and the leather over the chest to better suit my liking.
