Verdun Project 1916

Posted by sansovino on 22 Jan 2016, 11:54

Hi,

I am back after lots of other works which I had to do. I am working actually on a Great War-Diorama, the "Voie Sacrée" to Verdun in spring 1916.
I did a lot of research-work and have collected many fotos on this theme. It´s astonishing how small the range of affordable miniatures to WW1 are: there are rarely poses of marching soldiers and also resting poses in the boxes of big miniatures-producers. And nobody has find interest besides indians to the high number of other colonial soldiers who fought especially for the french in this war.

So I will integrate also some Senegalese and Morrocan soldiers in my diorama. Most of the figures will been alternations or personally new created figures especially many civilians of the time - the population of a small village in between the passing soldiers, carriages and trucks along the sacred road to Verdun. I have used for the soldiers-figures mostly W^D Models - a wonderful small producer of WW1-miniatures - and some Retrokit-, Airfix- and Pegasus-Miniatures and few Early War Miniatures. The bikers are mostly alternated japanese bikers from Hät which aren´t already shaded like all others figures.

Here some first appetizers of the buildings which are build besides two Airfix-buildings by my own.

I am using mostly the waiste-woodboards of building supplies stores - for the houses: thin plywood or HDF (hardboard), the last has the avantage that you can bend it till a certain degree which gives you more possibilities.
Interior walls are mostly constructed with cardboard. And I am using for the surfaces Milliput or Moltofill - both materials which gives you enough time (1 hour) to change still details. And for all further details or applications all materials which seems me suitable like tothpicks or matches.

... some new photos of the project still in work...

Nothing is already finished. The two ambulance carriages and the civlian carriage are own productions - the way return of the battlefield and the refugees of war. All lorries will been covered finally but here you can see still the troops who are sitting backside.

More troops and civilians will come ...

Hello.

An original idea and some great photo angles. I love the views from inside the buildings outwards. Only a suggestion but watch out for shadowing unless required.

Keep up the good work.

The dimensions are 36 x 78 cm. The diorama will been finished when I have resolved my closet-problem. It will been still much ground-work to do to create really a realistic warruins-diorama with much rubbish and fragmented parts.

Most of the french africans in brown are 2nd WW-miniatures of the wonderful british pewter producer Early War Miniatures. Some figures are alternations of plastic-french-figures. Their uniforms were nearly the same in both world wars:
