How to make mud for bases?

Posted by Mr. Andrea on 09 Apr 2015, 16:26

Hello everyone,
I am about to complete painting my DBA medieval French army and I would like to base it in mud, having in mind field conditions in Agincourt battle (if I remember well in Crecy and Poitiers was not that different).
Do you have any secret recipe for a good mud? I was thinking of mixing sand, white glue, brown paint, and some wood filler; then paint here and there with glossy varnish to create some moisture effect.
Thanks for helping.

very good looking figures,
maybe you can add a few static grass to your mixture, or scatter it (just a few) on to the mud at the end, and drybrushing it with "mud color".
I like how well the Italeri, Zvezda, and Accurate figures mixed

Wood filler, sand and brown paint is what I use to do my bases. Woodglue ùixed with water should do for the wet look. And adding some static grass could finish it.

One suggestion, add the mix on the base and push the figures in it. This way you don't have to go around the figures! ;-)

Vellejo make a number of very good basing compounds in 200ml bottles (that goes a long way).

'Dark Earth' is essentially mud & costs $18 (A) to buy. I wouldn't bother with the mess of mixing something when you can get something perfect for this price.

My recipe for mud is simple and economical:
Plaster, water, pigment and a little brown resin or barnish gloss.

I found that PVA glue, coffee grounds and a little water works well. Put it on the base, add some scatter grass and you're set.

Thanks to all! I see variations of the same recipe. I'll give a try to two or three combinations before basing the army. Coffee grounds, interesting they sound! For sure cheap.
