Vallejo Desert Sand

Posted by Bluefalchion on 22 Mar 2013, 15:43

According to reviews I have seen, this stuff comes in a jar and is a goopy, grainy product that you spread on surfaces to simulate sand at a very small scale. Has anyone tried this stuff? Does it give noticeably better results than white glue mixed with fine sand? I asked the guys at my local hobby store, but they had never heard of it.

It´s the same as normal sand mixed with woodglue.
Logically, if they were the only ones who could produce sand then it would make sense to buy it but seeing as they aren´t, they just re-package different grained sands (which are available at any builders Yard) and slap a big Price ticket on it.
If you can find a builders Yard where they won´t let you have a free Cup of sand which you can then mix with some woodglue (if you seal the lid it stays liquid for Ages) ...then it´s almost certain you´ve found the supply centre for GW/Vallejo

Tell me how you really feel! I guess I will try some wood glue mixed with fine-grain sand. Thanks for the tip.

Paul--

I tried your way. What a mess! Sand everywhere. Since I am an inexperienced modeler, I am going to try the Vallejo product. It costs a bit, sure, but I value the convenience and the fact that someone who knows what they are doing formulated the ratios, additives, colors, etc. It's in the post and I will show my comparative results.

The easiest and None messy way to make the stuff.
Take an old clean joguhrt pot and put a bit of Wood glue in the bottom. Then add sand, Maximum 1/4 full. Then add more glue and stir it with a lolly sick ( or whatever)
Keep adding the glue and mixing until you have a thick (not runny) paste.
