Very dumb question

Posted by Bramble15 on 20 Jul 2012, 19:09

 I am looking to start painting some HAT Prussian musketeers and grenadiers and questioning what blue to use. I will be using Vallejo paint.
The reason I feel dumb is because I have (and have used) Vallejo Prussian blue!!! Something to me just looks a little bright. Is it just me?
Can someone smack me in the right direction?

IMHO, never trust the colours as written on the "box" to give the colour in reality.
What colour was your basing?

I would use a dark blue and a light blue for lights and effects. That is the way I did it.

Hi Bramble,
Prussian Blue is the popular name of the bright blue artist's color ferric ferrocyanide. The Vallejo name may referring to THAT color, not Prussian uniforms. So there may be a good reason why it seems too bright to you.

But I know nothing about Prussian uniforms; one of the experts here like Paul or Mabo may have a better recommendation as to what other color is best to use.

I´m no expert on Napoleonic uniform colours but if I was aiming for something like prussian blue I would go for a violet-blue with some green added, that or blue with black and highlight by using less black or just adding white to the first mix.

Thanks for advice guys.

@ Paul - I have based them in black.

I think I am going to pull a couple practice figures and try a few times before giving it a serious go.

I've painted some Prussians a while ago and panted the uniform blue with a black wash. It gives a rather dark look.
